Shawano County Criminal Court Cases
The Wisconsin Circuit Court is Shawano County's trial court for state felonies, misdemeanors, and criminal traffic cases. Its case codes help sort the docket: CF means criminal felony, CM means criminal misdemeanor, and CT means criminal traffic. TR and FO refer to traffic ordinance and forfeiture matters and should not be labeled criminal convictions without reading the record. UC and WC may denote unemployment or workers-compensation warrants, not arrest warrants. Shawano County case numbers use the filing year, a two-letter case type, and a six-digit sequence. A short entry such as 04CF1 can normalize to 2004CF000001. Branch I and Branch II are parts of the same Shawano County Circuit Court, not separate courts with different criminal authority.
The Shawano County Clerk of Circuit Court is the legal custodian of the file. Wisconsin Circuit Court Access, or WCCA, is the public index. These are not the same thing. WCCA can show that a complaint or judgment was filed, but it does not display or sell the filed PDF. The joint Shawano-Bonduel Municipal Court handles city and village ordinance, traffic, code, and parking matters. It is not a felony or misdemeanor court.

Shawano County Case Clerk
A WCCA event label is not the document itself. When a complaint, judgment, exhibit, transcript, or certified copy is needed, contact the clerk in Room 206. The office is open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Documents returned by mail need a self-addressed stamped envelope with enough postage. Parking is behind the courthouse and on the block west of it. Accessible parking and an entrance are on the south end. Shawano County Courtroom Roles
The District Attorney reviews law-enforcement referrals and files or handles charges for county crimes, sheriff and State Patrol traffic matters, sheriff county ordinances, and specified DNR citations. The office is on the first floor of the courthouse. It cannot give legal advice to the public. The state Public Defender's Shawano office handles eligibility and defense services, and a representative interviews prior-business-day jail admissions on state traffic or criminal allegations.

How a Criminal Case Moves
A Shawano County criminal case may begin with an arrest or summons. The prosecutor then decides whether to file a complaint. An initial appearance addresses the complaint, rights, and release terms. In a felony, a preliminary examination or waiver can lead to bindover and an information, followed by arraignment. Discovery, motions, and pretrial work come before a plea or trial. Judgment and sentencing follow a conviction, with postconviction review or appeal possible later.

Under Wisconsin law, a felony preliminary examination generally begins within ten days for a person in custody on bail over $500 and within twenty days otherwise, subject to statutory continuance. Those are legal timing rules, not a promise that every Shawano County case will finish on a set date.
Shawano-Bonduel Court Boundary
The joint Shawano-Bonduel Municipal Court is a separate records channel for its members' ordinance, traffic, code, and parking cases. It does not try Wisconsin felonies or misdemeanors. County citations also do not shift there merely because the event occurred in the City of Shawano or Village of Bonduel. The issuing authority and case code determine which court holds the record.
This boundary prevents a municipal result from being mistaken for a complete Shawano County criminal court search.
Case Record Access & Restrictions
Wisconsin's Public Records Law begins with a presumption of access, but it does not make every court item public. Juvenile material, victim information, protected identifiers, sealed documents, and other restricted records can be withheld or redacted. Wisconsin Statutes §§ 801.19 through 801.21 cover protected identifiers and court processes for confidentiality, sealing, and redaction. Juvenile access follows a separate Chapter 938 framework.
When a Shawano County case or document does not appear online, ask the clerk whether it is archived, non-digitized, sealed, or otherwise unavailable. The clerk can explain access and copy procedure but cannot supply legal advice. Wisconsin has no universal fixed-day deadline for a public-record response. A custodian must respond as soon as practicable and without delay. Expungement under § 973.015 is narrow and ordinarily had to be ordered at sentencing. It affects the qualifying circuit record after successful completion, not every police, prosecutor, CIB, or federal file.
Federal Cases Beyond Shawano County
Federal criminal cases use a different system. Shawano County is in the Eastern District of Wisconsin, and federal dockets appear through PACER, subject to sealed and redacted material. The nearest regular federal courthouse is in Green Bay. A WCCA search will not replace PACER when conduct is charged under federal law.
